Third through fifth grades are a critical period for developing students' number sense. We spend a large percentage of time on this area, with a focus on the development of students' own strategies for solving problems. Fluency and accuracy are critical. Students do need to learn their addition and multiplication "facts" and many classroom and homework activities will help them do so. However, speed should not be confused with fluency, nor memorization with building a flexible knowledge of number relationships. |
Develop your math fluency and number sense by handling your own money, telling time, measuring while you bake or build, and playing games. Develop your automaticity (speed and accuracy) with good old-fashioned practice - you can use the buttons below to help or find other ways that appeal to you. If you find a particularly good method or website, let me know so that I can tell everyone about it!
